I've been getting various complaints from people, that they can't extract the alpha channel from the truck.png's, to do this skinning process. To the best of my knowledge, it could only be one of two things, either your video/graphix card cannot break the image down in a paint program, or the psp7 your running could be limiting you because of trial properties and such. If this is the case, I'm sorry for wasting your time, but I'll leave the skinning bible up for the few it has worked for. Once again, sorry, this process only seems to work for some computers and specs.
-------This is the newbie skinning tutorial, stage 1. ----------
I'll forwarn all viewing this, that this is for the true beginner, as I was at one time, but everyone might learn something new here. I think walking you threw this in paint shop pro 7 is as easy as I can make it. If you are intimadated by the program, trust me, get it, or simply download the trial versions until you can make a choice, but if you follow me step by step, threw the next newbie skinner's series of tutorials I'm making, you'll know how to use psp7 to skin, and for the people who are quick learners, and self starters, what I show you in these will enlighten you on different technics you can use in a more complex painting program later. This is going to be a very big tutorial combined, but it will be in sections, basic painting, like you can do in the game, is this one, exept here, you got more color choices, and you can add text, graphix, shadows, lighting, etc. I'll try and cover everything I know and use, so is to make the transition from total Newbie, to Newbie with skills, a bit less painful for all. It's not hard people really, you just need to be given the right tools, teaching, and some know how given, and anybody can do this.
Now, as far as tools you'll need to start.
1. paintshop pro7 trial:
Paintshop Pro 7 Trial, Offered at Chris1's T.S.S. site. I've found out that "Jasc" the developer of the software, no longer honors the psp7 build of their line of software, I'll have to look again, but I'm pretty sure. Contact me if you are having alot of trouble finding the program, if you really want it, I'll figure something out, so contact me.
2. Make sure you've extracted and copied, your base.scs, to your "My Documents Folder" default location of documents folder is on the main display of the C:/drive's properties. Also, process of base.scs extraction has been covered in my "File Structure help" tutorial if you need help there as well.
3. Make a folder for yourself, to use in this practice run, and for later, to keep your edits. I have mine as it's own directory on my D:/ drive, but lets put yours in your "My Documents" folder, this way, all your work is in one loaction, easy to find.
Name it anything you want, so long as you can easily find it later, when the tutorial calls for it.
We start once again, at the desktop, click on your my computer icon.
Now we are in the main computer properties folder, click your documents folder.
Select your 18WoS Across America Folder.
Select your makes folder.
Select your "Truck" folder.
For this tutorial, we will use the p_379, or Peterbilt truck ingame, feel free from this point to choose any truck you want to start with, all directions as follows are universal if you choose to start with something else.
Select the "acc" folder.
Select the "Shared" Folder.
As you can see above, we need to find the "paint" for the truck, in the desired shared folder. You can't miss it, it's the see threw looking template in any shared folder.
This is more or less a double image from above, but what I need to point out now, is now you'll need that editing folder I talked about. You can make one, and keep it anywhere in your computer you want, Mine is on my D:/drive, as it's own directory, you can simply put your edits folder in your "My Documents" folder if you want, it won't mess with the game at all, but you need it now either way. You'll need to get two copies of that clear truck from the shared folder.
Place first copy in your "Edits" folder that you made, re-name the temp "Base" for this practice.
Now drop second copy in your "Edits" folder, and rename it "Work Layer" the names you use are up to you, I use these so that once both are in viewing in the paint program, you can easily distinguish the two, and mistakes are minimal.
Now, open both paint temps in psp7, you can simply right click each image, select open with, and psp7 should be in the right click dialog box. Once both are in viewing in psp7, minimize the Work Layer, for now we need to make the Base image, a good base image for skinning.
Now, we should be seeing the base layer in main view, go up to the "Selection" tab, click it, choose "Load From Alpha Channel" once it gives you the active alpha view box, select "elete" then the "Ok" tab.
Now get rid of the windowed view box by clicking the upsize tab on the viewer that looks like a square, and now we should have the alphaless image against the screen door pattern background as seen above. Look to the left, you'll see a button, that looks like a square made out of dashes, that is the selection box tool. click it, hold right-click, until selection box is entirely around the image, and let go of the mouse key. Now we should have dot slashes moving around the outside of the image.
We need to go back up to the "Selection" tab, at the top, click, and choose "Save To Alpha" hit "Ok", and when it gives you the alpha name box, simply type "Alpha 1", ok it, and save all changes to the image. Some windows programs, after saving, put the new image back to where you got it from. So if the image is no longer in psp7, minimize psp7, go back to your edits folder, and re-open the "Base" image in psp7 again.
